Us, You, and Mighty No. 9

mno9banner Greetings folks. Yesterday's announcement from Keiji Inafune was something else, no? There appears to be a lot of excitement for this project, especially since just 12 hours after launching, the Kickstarter drive is already nearing half of its minimum required funding. And the vast majority of responses to Mighty No. 9 I've seen have been positive. But now we'd like to air some thoughts on all of this, and we hope you'll take the time to read ahead, as this affects the course of the site.

The Mega Man Network is, as I'm sure you're aware, a Mega Man fan site. Covering Mega Man is what we do, and it's what we'll continue to do. But we're also aware there could be considerable interest in covering Mighty No. 9, too.  Now this is a fan site; we have absolutely no affiliation with Capcom or any other company, and thus are free to post about whatever we like. But we're also not just a simple Mega Man blog. All that we do here, not just the news but the media collecting, the community interactions, and the prize giveaways, is for those of you who come and read this site. And we've wanted to make The Mega Man Network a fun place for fans, since in recent years Mega Man has, aside from occasional licensed goods, fallen mostly dormant.

So rather than making this decision ourselves, we're giving the choice to you. We'd like to hear from you if you want us to cover Mighty No. 9 in the same way we cover Mega Man. How that may play out in the future, whether it might be determined this site needs re-branding, or have Mighty No. 9 break off into its own site, or so on, remains to be seen. But ultimately we want to do what serves you best. I know a lot of people have very strong, passionate feelings about Mega Man.

Just speaking on my own behalf, I would like to cover Mighty No. 9. I'm always going to love Mega Man, and Mighty No. 9 isn't going to change my feelings about past games. But really, it just feels good to be excited for a new game again. We've still gotten other cool stuff in the interim, and I earnestly believe a lot of people, such as the fine folks at Capcom Unity, are on our side and have been fighting the good fight for us. But at the end of the day, it comes down to the games. That's what brought us into the fandom, and that's what we subsist on. When you take games away, little else can substitute.

Ideally, I don't want just to see Mighty No. 9 succeed and be a great game. I want it to spark ambition in Capcom of Japan to answer back with a good Mega Man of their own. Rivalries have brought out some of the best games; people around in the Nintendo/Sega era know this well. But my pessimistic side worries that the only thing it will spark is lawsuits.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to give this a read, and we hope you make your voices heard. We imagine a lot of you would welcome the coverage, but we didn't want to make this choice without you. Without all of you, none of what we do here would matter!

The deadline for this giveaway is September 1st, the stroke of midnight PST. Good luck!

Now to Announce the D-Arts Forte Giveaway Winner...

dartsforte We put out the call for a chance to win Bandai's D-Arts Forte action figure, and had you suggest your own ideas would Bass star in his own game. There were some pretty interesting ideas! For being a baddie, Bass is pretty popular. Nevertheless, only one response could be chosen. And then response ended up being from... DigiRock!

A “What if” story game that kind of runs parallel to a Mega Man story. Each level Bass battles through errant robots in his way as Mega makes his way through a Robot Master dungeon. If Bass gets to the Robot Master first, he can dispose of him and face Mega Man himself with the Robot Master weapon in his arsenal to impede his progress. After the eight bosses are played through, he can meet up with Mega Man to finally see who is the strongest.

If you manage to beat him using only your buster and have avoided dying, you can go after Wily and get rid of him, so the true ending would be Bass carving out his own destiny.

Very cool stuff. Congrats, DigiRock! And thank you to everyone who entered! I know we can only provide so much, but rest assured that chances to win more goods are coming down the road! Good luck everyone!

Time for a Summer Giveaway! D-Arts Forte!!

dartsforte Things are getting hot this summer, but what if we make them even hotter? Forte's anger and rivalry should get things really cooking! And we have one of these magnificent D-Arts figures to give away this month.

You should know the drill by now, but the way to enter for a chance to win is simple. Just comment on this post. We want to know, if Bass/Forte were the star of his own game, what kind of game would you want it to be? Answer in as little or as much detail as you like. After the deadline we will randomly choose one of these comments as the winner. Please comment with your real e-mail so we can contact you later!

The deadline for entry will be the stroke of midnight on July 7th, Sunday, US pacific time. Please leave only one comment. Good luck to you all!

Announcing the Winners for Our Mega Buster USB Giveaway!

MMUSBBuster_largescreenshot3 Evening folks! It's time to announce the winners of our Mega Buster USB drive giveaway! We got over 240 entries for this prize, and picking three winners was tough! Well, it wasn't really that touch, I just used a random number generator, But still, I wish we could do more!

The winners have already been contacted and shipping preparations are in order, so it's time to let you get to know them. Congratulations to Misora Kuroko, k0n4 and AkuKnives! We will show you their comments about what games they'd want to see remade after the break!

We want to thank everyone for participating. If you didn't win this time don't despair! I am certain we will have more giveaways coming your way soon! You are what we do this whole thing for, after all. This our trifling way of giving back. Thanks again!

Misora Kuroko:

I really love to see a remake of Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star buuut to rebuild the entire game, with a theme completely new, a true crossover of battle network and starforce with new ways in which both characters fight together against viruses and virus denpa and show an interesting story that connects a relationship between the time of the two sagas and come out to the console nintendo 3DS, I’d love something like that.

k0n4:

Mega Man X3. I mean, it seems clear to me that Capcom envisioned a huge adventure for X, with all sorts of power ups and alternate routes and Zero and, well, everything. While the finished product is far from a terrible game, it just feels, well… Rushed perhaps? I mean, if I recall correctly, X3 was to the X series what MM6 was to the original MM series, i.e. a game coming out at the tail end of a console’s life. It just feels like resources at Capcom were reallocated to other projects and that attention wasn’t entirely focused on making X3 a fantastic game. I love that they made Zero playable but, as anyone who’s ever played MMX3 will tell you, he’s hardly the robot Strider that he became in MMX4 and beyond. When all is said and done, I guess I would love to see X3 perhaps re-envisioned with elements from X4 and X5 ? perhaps a “remastered” edition, as it were?

AkuKnives:

I’d love to see MegaMan 3 remastered. I wouldn’t mind at all if it were simply an 8-bit “director’s cut” of the game.

The reason I choose MM3 is that Inafune always had a love/hate relationship with this game because it was such a headache to make. One of the biggest headache’s being the serious time constraints that they were under when making it. This caused them to leave out a huge portion of the things they had planned, and it’s why we don’t get an opening for the game, which all other 8-bit MM games had (except MM1).

So I’d really love to see MM3 re-done with all the things they left out. MM3 has always been my favorite because of how vast of a game it is. We got 16 Robot Masters, Rush, ProtoMan, the slide, and they STILL left things out!

What would the opening have looked like? Would there be more story around ProtoMan? Would we have seen how the DocRobots came into existence with data from previous Robot Masters? More music?!?!

This game deserves to be given to the world in it’s complete vision.
